Costume Agency: Devising Garment Workshop

Dec 10, 2018

Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and KHiO - Oslo National Academy of the Arts Invite to join
Costume Agency: Devising Garment
March 4th – 15th, 2019 (10.00 – 14.00 Mon-Fri)
DAMU, Prague, Czech Republic

This workshop led by dramaturg and curator Sodja Lotker (CZ) will explore potential of devising theatre with costume as starting point. We will explore costume’s performative potential in the theatre through using basic devised theatre ideas (concept, context, composition, material, try-out, fail, accident etc.) and strategies (reading from material, potential of material, tasks etc.).

Devised theatre is not based in a traditional theatre play but created from different kinds of material through rehearsing. In this workshop we will take ready-made costumes (a mix of existing historical, contemporary costumes as well as non-theatre garments) as the basis for creating performance. By translating, constructing, reconstructing, and deconstructing garments, accessories, masks, and other body extensions (and often without physically damaging them) we will explore the potential of costume as the main material of the performance.  Further we will explore its performative potential within performance by mixing it and matching with other theatre ‘ingredients’ such as photos, stories, material, films, references, quotes, objects, texts, gestures, movements, spaces, ideas, dreams, half-baked thoughts, and forgotten desires.

Costume Agency: Devising Garment is part of Costume Agency a four-year artistic research project by Christina Lindgren (KHiO, Norway) and Sodja Lotker (DAMU, Czech Republic).

Workshop is open for students and professionals. There is no participation fee. We have no scholarships for travel and accommodation. To apply, send your motivation letter and short bio to sodja.zupanclotker@damu.cz not later than January 20th, 2018.
