What is Scenofest?

May 30, 2024

Scenofest, combining “scenography” and “festival”, is a worldwide festival and celebration of performance design that takes place every four years as a part of WSD. Devised by renowned scenographer and educator Pamela Howard in 1994, programs of Scenofest include seminars, workshops, performances, and presentations of leading theatre practitioners in all areas of performance design, technology and theatre architecture. Scenofest originated as part of the PQ in 2003 and continued until 2011. Since 2013, Scenofest has become an integral part of WSD.

In every edition, the host of Scenofest determines whether to adopt a specific theme. In 2017, Scenofest embraced the theme of "Design as Performance," while in 2022, it revolved around "Three Sisters," encompassing "Indigenous Ways of Knowing," "Eco-Scenography," and "Multiple Reality." These themes are carefully chosen to mirror the prevailing trends and critical concerns within the global theatre community.
