Concept by Bassam Yaqout
Deadline April 30, 2022

OISTAT Performance Design Commission at World Stage Design, Mr. Rob Eastman, Mr. Bassam Yaqout, and The Theatre Jam Session 2022 curators invite all interested practitioners to submit entries for
The Theatre Jam Session 2022 at World Stage Design in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The Theatre Jam Session 2022 is an opportunity for selected improvised works by performance designers and musicians to publicly present their work. The Theatre Jam Session 2022 builds an inclusive international community amongst theatre artists and musicians to learn about current trends and methods employed around the world. It is a fun and enjoyable event for WSD attendees and is an opportunity for the public to learn about scenography and theatre creation.

Presentations may be performances, demonstrations, improvised acting /dance, playback of previous musical work (Musical Theatre, sound art, installation sound, scores, etc.) or work in development. The focus will be on Live Improvised Theatre Performances which will be presented on an outdoor stage in the summer evenings on the University of Calgary campus. Each entry will have a maximum of 20 minutes in length.

We especially encourage (but are not limited to) applications which reflect the following:

Format:

Theatre Jam Session 2022 will take place outdoors in a festival party atmosphere with outdoor seating and bar service. The exact number of performances per evening will be determined by the number of successful entries, typically 4-8 performances per evening over 3 nights. There will be an opportunity to discuss your work with the theatre audience after the performance.

Performance Environment:

The venue is outdoor green space on the University of Calgary campus nestled between the University Theatre and Craigie Hall; the centre of WSD 2022 activities. This will be a space to gather and meet with friends and colleagues in a casual and relaxed environment. Please note, all Alberta Health Services regulations will be followed.

The space is flexible and can be adapted to performance needs. Applicants are encouraged to detail what materials may be required, which materials they intend to bring to Canada, and should plan to bring their own playback equipment.

Sound System:

Sound Design Performers are asked to supply all playback equipment, all necessary software, and anything else needed to perform the work. Output should be Dante or line-level balanced analog audio. We are open to including remote performers if technology allows, but at least one participant should be available in Calgary for the performance. Live Musicians are asked to supply their musical Instruments.

Other Notes:

There is no fee to submit your application. Performers must clear all potential copyright claims for the work being presented. You will be required to sign a waiver stating you have copyright permission to use the material you are presenting. The Theatre Jam Session 2022 is 100% voluntary; performers are not paid, nor are there any funds for travel, accommodation, per diem, or any other expenses incurred. The aim is to share the knowledge with the widest possible group of artists from diverse cultural backgrounds.
