An International Symposium

The BRNO THEATRALIA CONFERENCE 2016, hosted by the Department of Theatre Studies, Masaryk University (Brno, Czech Republic), is part of a series starting with a conference at the University of Hull (UK) in 2015 and planned to be concluded by a conference at the Ohio State University (USA) in 2017.

The international symposium

BRNO THEATRALIA CONFERENCE 2016:
CZECH & SLOVAK SCENOGRAPHY FOR SHAKESPEARE
seeks to make available to the international scholarly community, and also to the various theatre professionals who deal with the productions of Shakespeare’s plays, an account of the differing strategies of design and the scenic environments in and through which Shakespeare has historically been explored in Moravia, one of the historical Czech lands, from the mid-nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. In an attempt to acknowledge the significance of theatre practices outside of the country’s capital, the conference aims to examine Moravia and its theatre culture as the focal point and crossroads of Central European theatre in the context of staging Shakespeare.

Selected proceedings from the conference will be published in a special issue of THEATRALIA (vol. 2018/2; the paper submission deadline is 31 December 2017).

BRNO THEATRALIA CONFERENCE 2016 is the first conference of a planned series of conferences connected to the journal THEATRALIA.

For the conference and the subsequent publication, we welcome papers that consider staging Shakespeare in Moravia during the period 1840–2016. We invite and encourage especially the contributions that explore:
