Thinking Costume is a two-day research seminar that brings together a multidisciplinary group of researchers and practitioners working on costume-related and costume-led research projects. The seminar aims to offer peer-support for doctoral (PhD) candidates, MFA students working on their research thesis and early career researchers and academics, including post-doctoral researchers conducting research in the field of costume, or in related artistic fields involving dress and performance in theatre, film and media.
The seminar focuses on the development of research work and theses by inviting participants to present their current and ongoing research in the field of costume and to think about and through costume. The seminar offers a forum for dialogue and exchange of ideas by providing peer support, tutoring and critical feedback by international and distinguished peers. Invited OISTAT CDG members will also take an active role as respondents to the emerging scholars’ subjects and approaches, supporting the integration of theory and practice.
The Thinking Costume seminar also aims to map early career researchers involved in costume research internationally and to establish a networking practice for sharing the latest news, trends and enquiries in costume research, generating opportunities for future research collaborations.
We invite doctoral candidates, researchers and academics researching Costume Design or closely related fields to give a presentation on their current and in-progress research topics at this international research seminar. The event is also open to MFA students and graduates with a demonstrated interest in pursuing doctoral studies in Costume Design and related fields, who are working on their research thesis, preparing a new research plan or more broadly interested in researching costume.
We welcome proposals for 20 min presentations on the subject of costume or on the intersection of costume with other fields, exploring diverse approaches to costume design, e.g. historical, cultural, sociological, methodological, educational, practice-based and theoretical perspectives. As this is a researcher development event, each participant will be offered a personal slot for feedback following the presentation. Proposals included in the programme will be selected through blind peer-review. To allow development work, the seminar will host a maximum of 12 presenters.
To submit your work, please email: your name, contact and affiliation, a title, a 500-word extended abstract/summary of your topic, indication of its nature (e.g. doctoral thesis, research article in progress, research application, etc.) and a 50-word biography to Susanna Suurla: susanna.suurla@aalto.fi. By sending your proposal, you also register for the event.
Deadline for the submission of proposals: 5 April 2017.
There is no fee for attendance. Coffee and lunch will be offered to all participants. The event is funded by the Costume Methodologies project with support by the OISTAT CDG and WSD2017.
Attendance at the seminar is restricted to presenters and respondents only.

The Costume Research Seminar: Thinking Costume is organized by the “Costume Methodologies” research project at Aalto University, Finland, which focuses on ways to research and analyse costume in performance, with the OISTAT Costume Design Group (CDG) - a partner to the project.
