Wan-Jung Wei, with 2 years at OISTAT Headquarters, recently takes on the role of Manager at HQ office since October. Wan-Jung Wei traveled from UN Headquarters to OISTAT HQ to combine her passion for arts and her training in international affairs. Here are 8 questions we asked of WJ: (that is what we nickname her at the office, and it sounds androgynously hip!)
1) How did you migrate to OISTAT HQ in the first place?
I was trained to be a diplomat yet through my four years at National Taiwan University, I always had the feeling that I can do more than politics with my passion for dance. After graduating from NYU and briefly working at UN headquarters, I moved back to Taipei searching for a position that could combine my two interests –arts and politics. Luckily, I found OISTAT HQ, a place where I can work for performing arts with my skills of international affairs.
2) What has been your best learning experience up to date?
The best learning experience was in New York where I had the opportunity to meet many young arts activists and artists from all over the world who share the same interests with me.
3) What has been the biggest takeaway at OISTAT?
The belief of “I am doing something good for the world.”
4) What challenges do you think await you in this new position?
I would say I need to move faster and think quicker to balance my life as a choreographer and an arts manager.
5) How do you envision OISTAT in the next 5 years?
OISTAT to be the most recognizable international brand as a common good organization in theatre-related field and to include many more young professionals.
6) What are you reading at the moment?
I just finished An Economist Gets Lunch: New Rules for Everyday Foodies by Tyler Cowen. Next in line is Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty by Daron Acemoglu, James Robinson
7) What is the next upcoming event you are looking forward to?
Super excited about the 2014 Executive Committee meeting in Brazil. I have never been to South America and look forward to attending some Brazilian dance classes if time permits.
8) Anything you'd like to get off your chest that we didn't touch on?
Just want to say, I am proud to be a team member of OISTAT HQ.
